Earlier this month I wrote about an idea that popped into my head while sitting on the beach on our anniversary trip: a book club– with you. The response was overwhelmingly positive! Most of you were game as long as there isn’t much of a time commitment and the books aren’t terrible. Check, and check.
I’ve been putting a lot of thought into how to make this work lately. Here’s the particulars:
At the beginning of each month, we choose a new book and take the whole month to read it. I know that everyone is busy with real life- jobs, blogs, family- so hopefully a month is enough time to get a book in.
At the end of the month, we’ll “meet” to discuss what we thought of the book. How to actually “meet” tripped me up for a while, but in the end Kevin came through. His idea was to have everyone with a blog post about the book on their site, then link up via inlinkz (that’s what YHL uses for the Pinterest Challenge links) here. Everyone without a blog (and those who don’t want to blog about the book) can post their thoughts here as comments.
I think that this format would be a minimal time commitment (nothing more than actually reading the book and writing a post or commenting).
Of course to have a book club, you must first have books. Here are a few suggestions of mine (and one from my mom). You can click on the image to go to the Amazon page for the book.
The Friday Night Knitting Club by Kate Jacobs
These are by no means the only books to choose from, so if you have a book you’ve been dying to read, share it. We’ll make the final selection next week for July’s book.
What are you reading right now? Do you have any suggestions for what to read? A suggestion for how to run the discussions? I’m all ears and super excited to get going on this!
This sounds exciting! Once I get caught up on my “to read” list- I’ll definitely think about joining in! I have no time to read until after July 14th… then I get my life back! lol
Sounds fun! I’ll definitely try to join in. Although with Amazon shipping charges here it’d be nice to have a reading list for the following 3-4 months so I can order them all in one shipment 🙂
I’ll see what we can do!
I’ve started the Friday Night Knitting Club so that would be PERFECT! (Plus, I’ve already read the Shack – and it was kinda heavy for a fun summer read.)
Yay! Other ideas: The Happiness Project.
Ah! I just read the synopsis of the Happiness Project! It sounds great!
My mom read the Shack and suggested it, but it does sound pretty heavy.
This is such a fun idea! I’m so glad you’re doing this. My commute is so long that I’m constantly reading (or writing out a blog post) so it’s nice to have another option! I have a few books on hold or me at the NY Public Library but I can definitely ask them to hold whichever book you pick. 🙂
Would any you have on hold work here? I’m really liking the Friday Night Knitting Club and the Happiness Project, but I’d thought maybe we could plan out the rest of the summer so Ainoha can buy all her books at once.
The books I have on hold are:
– Divergent By Veronica Roth (supposed to be similar to the Hunger Games)
– The Last September By Elizabeth Bowen (supposedly like Downton Abbey)
– Seating Arrangements By Shipstead, Maggie (a rec from a friend)
They all seem interesting but I’m not sure how light they are 🙂 And I’ll reserve The Happiness Project and the Friday Night Knitting Club on the NYPL website right now!
I haven’t read any of those books, but this sounds so fun! It doesnt matter to me what we pick! 🙂
Friday Night Knitting Club sounds fun!
Oh my heavens, Persuasion is my F-A-V-O-R-I-T-E Austen book. I’d love to read it again, but Friday Night Knitting Club appeals to me too 🙂
Persuasion is my all time favorite, too! I think we’re going to start with the Friday Night Knitting Club, then read The Happiness Project and Persuasion. I’ll post on it later this week.
Just got back from a road trip and I’m half way through Friday Night Knitting Club – and it’s good!
Awesome! That’s going to be July’s read, so you’re ahead of the curve!
